Former Mason City man sent to prison on burglary charge

MASON CITY — It’s five years in prison for a former Mason City man originally charged with robbery, burglary and false imprisonment stemming from an incident two years ago.
25-year-old Jonathan Scott was accused of being at a home in the 200 block of North Jefferson on August 29th 2023 with another male. A criminal complaint states the victim stated that Scott allegedly pointed what looked to be a handgun at the victim’s torso while in the home’s enclosed front porch. Scott then allegedly escorted the victim into his house and demanded money. The complaint states that Scott took about $965 from the bedroom and living room areas of the house. Scott was at-large until he was arrested on January 20th in Illinois and eventually brought back to Iowa.
Scott was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary, each a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison, as well as false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor. As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Scott pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary and agreed to be sentenced to five years in prison.
District Judge Blake Norman agreed with that recommendation when recently sentencing Scott.
