State Highway 122 reconstruction work in Mercy corridor begins today

MASON CITY — Construction begins today on a section of State Highway 122 in Mason City.
The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Pete Hjelmstad says they’ll be reconstructing the section of highway from South Pierce to South Monroe Avenues. “Starting Monday, there will be inside lane closures at Pierce and at Monroe, not through the entire section, but just in the vicinity of those two intersections as we need to remove the medians so we can have room to move traffic when we start reconstructing the westbound lanes on the north side.”
Hjelmstad says once they’ve removed the medians they will start working on one side of the road at a time. “Then we will switch traffic into the eastbound lanes where it will be one lane of travel in each direction, and we will start reconstructing the north side or the westbound lanes.”
During the duration of the project, motorists will always have access to the MercyOne North Iowa campus.
