Clear Lake holds first spring large item drop-off evening starting Thursday

CLEAR LAKE — After a successful first event last fall, the City of Clear Lake will be holding its first spring citywide large item drop-off program later this week.
The city in September of last year announced they were no longer going to offer a semi-annual large-item curbside pickup program due to several flaws, including illegal dumping and safety concerns for city employees. Residents last October for three days were able to bring large items to the Clear Lake Public Works yard waste site at 1419 2nd Avenue South for free.
Public Works director Jeremy Korenberg says after the success of last fall, they are keeping things the same for this spring. “It is for residents only, so we will ask for an ID or utility bill as you enter as a proof of residency. It is just for residents, so no businesses or no commercial use as well, similar to what we did on the curbside as well when we did that.”
Korenberg talks about what will and won’t be allowed to be dropped off. “No cardboard, propane tanks, gas tanks, concrete, tires. If there’s paints and chemicals, stuff like that, we can’t take that, but you can take that to the landfill, they have an option for that, which I think is a free dropoff for just residents. Same thing for fluorescent light bulbs. We will accept TVs and appliances at the dropoff. You get two free appliances and two free TVs, as well as included in that is some of the ‘e-waste’, so printers, computer monitors, etc.”
The program will take place Thursday from 8:00 AM-7:00 PM, Friday from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, and Saturday from 8:00 AM-1:00 PM.
