Hermanson leads bill through Iowa House to eliminate sales tax on toilet paper

DES MOINES — Mason City representative Christian Hermanson has helped lead a bill through the Iowa House that would eliminate the sales tax on toilet paper.

“House File 964 does exactly what you might guess, it wipes away the stain of sales tax on toilet paper in Iowa. The bill recognizes toilet paper as not a luxury, it’s not a choice, it’s a necessity, and I think we can all agree taxing it stinks,” Hermanson said during debate of the bill on Wednesday.

Hermanson says the change in the sales tax rules brings toilet paper in line with other essential items that are not taxed at the grocery store. “Under this bill, the sale of toilet paper will be exempt from state sales tax, just like we do for groceries, medicine and other essential household items. It’s a small change, but for Iowans managing tight budgets, every little bit helps.”

The bill passed on an 82-11 vote, with all 11 voting against being Republicans, including Charles City representative Charley Thomson.

The bill now heads to the Senate for its consideration
