Day after his bill passes exempting toilet paper from sales tax, Hermanson bill exempting laundry detergent passes House

DES MOINES — A day after having his bill exempting sales tax from the purchase of toilet paper, Mason City Republican representative Christian Hermanson had his bill exempting sales tax from the sale of laundry soap or detergent pass the Iowa House on Thursday.
“House File 1022 is a straightforward, common sense bill that exempts the sale of laundry soap and detergent from Iowa state sales tax by adding them to the list of essential household goods that are not taxed,” Hermanson said. “Recognizing these items as basic necessities, not luxuries for Iowa families.”
Hermanson says the bill helps Iowans with their cost of essential living. “This bill is about the right thing, cutting taxes on everyday essentials and helping Iowans keep a little more of their hard-earned money.”
The bill passed on an 84-5 vote, with the five no votes coming from Republicans, including Charles City representative Charley Thomson
