Despite recent rain, work progresses on US 65, State Highway 122 projects in Mason City

MASON CITY — Despite a rainy last week, work continues on multiple road projects in Mason City.
Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa Department of Transportation says crews working on the reconstruction of US Highway 65 in the southern part of the city are making good progress. “They’ve done most of the underground work. They are still doing some storm sewer work. Hopefully, the second week of May, they will be paving the area from 6th to 10th. One change you might see, if you’ve noticed, there have been crews working down at 19th Street and 65, they’ve been off the road, but they are getting ready to start putting in some new street lights and some new traffic lights and new traffic signals. So probably next week, you’ll see some lane closures so they can get that work done.”
On State Highway 122 near MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, traffic shifted to one-lane head-to-head going each direction last week while the north side of the road is being reconstructed. Hjelmstad reminds motorists there’s no left turns in that section of road, but access to the hospital remains available. “Remember if you are going eastbound and you want to get to the hospital, take a left at Pierce and a right at 3rd and just go right into the parking lot. If you are going westbound, Crescent Drive is closed. We’re reconstructing that area right now, but Mercy Drive is still open. When Crescent Drive is done, we will close Mercy Drive and re-open Crescent so you can use that to get to the hospital, and then later in the project, we’ll have both of those open.”
This phase of the State Highway 122 project is expected to wrap up around Memorial Day.
