Centerline rumble strips coming to north-central Iowa two-lane highways

MASON CITY — There will be more centerline rumble strips coming to two-lane state highways in north-central Iowa in the near future.

Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa Department of Transportation says it’s part of a statewide initiative.   “We have a statewide project, and we started this last year, maybe even the fall before, where we are putting in centerline rumble strips on every two-lane road in the state. We’ve seen too many vehicles who will cross the centerline and get in head-on crashes. So we decided to put together a project and put in centerline rumble strips on every two-lane state highway across the state.”

Hjelmstad says the contractor doing the rumble strips will be in north-central Iowa over the next few months.  “If there’s some of these roads where we do have a resurfacing project or something planned in the next year or two, we’re not going to put in the rumble strips now and then just tear them out in a year or two. We’ll wait until we come with the project. That is something to be aware of as well that will be going on over the next couple of months.”

Motorists traveling between Clear Lake and Garner on US Highway 18 will start seeing the installation of rumble strips this week into early next week.
