Latimer man charged in Mason City burglary pleads guilty to lesser charge

MASON CITY — A Latimer man accused of burglarizing a Mason City home back in October has pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.
Authorities say 28-year-old Miguel Calles entered a residence through a window in the 200 block of 1st Southwest in the early morning hours of October 8th with the intent to commit a theft. A complaint says Calles assaulted a female by slapping her on the face. Calles is accused of taking three cell phones from the victim.
Calles was charged with second-degree burglary, a Class C felony, as well as domestic abuse assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor.
Court records show he entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors on Friday, pleading guilty to third-degree burglary, an aggravated misdemeanor, as well as domestic abuse assault, a serious misdemeanor.
As part of the agreement, both prosecuting and defense attorneys will recommend a suspended two-year prison term on the burglary charge; as well as a one-year jail term with all but 14 days suspended with credit for time served on the domestic abuse assault charge.
A sentencing date was not immediately set.
