Planting progress slowed last week by rain

DES MOINES — Rain last week cut into progress being made in Iowa fields, according to the latest USDA crop report.
USDA ag statistician Rebecca Alter says most farmers could not even spend half of last week in the field. “While some producers were able to get into their fields, precipitation continued to delay planting in many parts of the state, allowing only 3.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 4th, 2025.”
Out of the nine crop reporting districts in the state, the north-central district was the worst for farmers to be in the field last week, with only 1.9 days suitable for fieldwork reported.
Alter says corn planting is about half done statewide while soybean planting is just above a third done. “Corn planted reached 49%, three days ahead of last year but two days behind the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 10%, two days ahead of last year’s pace and three days ahead of normal. 38% of the expected soybean crop has been planted, one week ahead of last year and two days ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans emerged reached 5%.”
Here in the north-central crop district, 32% of the corn has been planted with 3% emerged. 47% of the soybeans have been planted with 1% emerged.
