Mason City man pleads guilty to federal meth, firearm charges

SIOUX CITY — A Mason City man has pleaded guilty to federal drug and firearm charges.
The US Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa’s office says 34-year-old Jacob Shafer made the guilty pleas to one count of possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine and one count of illegal possession of a firearm during a hearing in federal court in Sioux City on Wednesday. At the plea hearing, Shafter admitted to prior convictions and being an unlawful drug user in possession of firearms.
Prosecutors also say that evidence showed that in March of last year during the execution of a search warrant at his home, law enforcement discovered four bags of meth, numerous items of drug paraphernalia, a digital scale, and four pistols along with ammunition. Shafer admitted that he planned on distributing the meth officers found.
When sentenced at a later date, Shafer faces between five and 40 years in prison and up to a $5 million fine on the meth possession charge, as well as up to 15 years and a $250,000 fine on the firearm possession charge.
