Legislature comes back to statehouse today after no vote on eminent domain bill

DES MOINES — Lawmakers head back to the statehouse today as they head into their second week of overtime in the 2025 session.

The Senate adjourned on Friday after Republicans met for hours to privately debate eminent domain restrictions on the proposed Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline, and then went home without taking any public vote.

Opponents of the pipeline say it was a stunning development after being told a bill would come up for a vote.

A dozen Republican senators, including Doug Campbell of Mason City and Dennis Guth of Klemme, have vowed to boycott votes on state budget bills until the Senate votes to limit Summit’s authority to seize land for the project.

Both the Iowa House and Senate are scheduled to be in session later this morning.
