Bill blocking eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines passes Senate on 27-22 vote

DES MOINES — The Iowa Senate last night on a 27-22 vote passed a bill that will make it harder for companies to seize property for proposed carbon capture pipelines.

A group of 12 Republicans who boycotted votes on the state budget in order to force a vote on the bill, which also requires more insurance for carbon pipelines. Those 12 Republicans who boycotted budget votes included Doug Campbell of Mason City and Dennis Guth of Klemme.

Some Republicans who voted against the bill said during last night’s debate that they support private property rights but accused Republicans who voted for it of being stubborn, naive and inexperienced.

The bill now heads to Governor Reynolds, who will have to make the decision on whether to sign it into law or veto it.
