Longtime IHSAA executive director Saggau dies at age 96

BOONE — Former Iowa High School Athletic Association executive director Bernie Saggau has died. The Iowa High School Athletic Association says Saggau died on Friday at the age of 96. He served the IHSAA between 1963 and 2005, becoming the executive director in 1967. He oversaw things such as the creation of the football playoffs in 1972 and making Iowa the first state to utilize the three-point shot in basketball in 1982. The Bernie Saggau Award of Merit is awarded each year to outstanding high school seniors at each member school who have displayed leadership, service and support of education-based activities that reflect the values of the association.
