Iowa legislature pulls all-nighter to end 2025 session

DES MOINES — The 2025 session of the Iowa General Assembly has come to a close.

Lawmakers pulled an all-nighter to get the session done. It was supposed to conclude on May 2nd.

Republicans say the top accomplishment was a bill reducing the tax rate businesses must pay into the state’s unemployment trust fund.

Democrats were critical about legislators failing to address the state’s housing crisis, improve access to child care or lower property taxes.

Democrats also weren’t pleased with the Republican’s $9.4 billion state budget, which will draw $900 million out of state reserves.

The Senate adjourned at 6:01 this morning, followed by the House at 6:31 AM.
