Mason City council buys property at 12th and North Pierce for roundabout

MASON CITY — The City Council in Mason City this week approved the purchase of land near the intersection of 12th Street Northwest and North Pierce Avenue as they prepare to construct a roundabout to help spur future development in that area. The city will purchase the property at 1225 12th Northwest from TD Young Rentals LLC for $120,000. The land is located directly across the street to the east from a Casey’s convenience store.

City Administrator Aaron Burnett says the purchase of the property is necessary for the placement of the roundabout.  “One of the reasons we’re constrained on that site is if you look to the south in that area, we have Casey’s on the opposite side, and there’s really no opportunity to go and claim a corner. That Casey’s is already a very compact site for that building, so realistically the only way we had to go to facilitate this improvement was to go over towards the house.”

The council earlier this year approved a zoning change for the property at 1300 12th Northwest from Restricted Industry to Multi-Use. The owner Indianhead Farms stated at the time of the zoning change proposal that they were intending to sell the property for the development of a medium box commercial building with accessory parking and onsite storm water detention for the possible construction of a Dollar General store.
