Area state track recap from first day

DES MOINES — The state track meet got underway on Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines with several area athletes winning events:

 

== Reese Brownlee of Clear Lake won the Class 3A girls 400 meter run in a time of 54.84, with Kelly Grobstich of Davenport Assumption finishing second in 55.50. 

 

== Kadence Huck of Nashua-Plainfield won the Class 1A girls 400 meter run in a time of 55.61. Evelyn Hitzhusen of West Fork finished 10th in the event

 

== Giovanni Garcia of West Hancock won the Class 1A boys long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 2.75 inches. 

 

== Gavin Grunhovd of North Iowa won the Class 1A boys 3200 meter run in a time of 9:22.99. Hayden Thompson and Knute Rogne of Lake Mills finished fourth and fifth in the event

 

Looking at other area athletes that finished in the top ten in their events:

 

== Charlee Morton of Hampton-Dumont-CAL finished third in the Class 3A girls discus, while Leah Stewart of Charles City finished tenth

 

== Ray Gretilat of West Hancock finished third in the Class 1A boys shot put, while Braden Halvorson of St. Ansgar finished fourth

 

== Scarlett Byrnes of Osage finished fourth in the Class 2A girls 3000

 

== The St. Ansgar girls 4×800 medley relay team finished fourth in Class 1A

 

== Quinn Street of Osage finished fifth in the Class 2A boys 400 meters, while Holden Reynolds of Forest City finished ninth

 

== Daniel Sutcliff of St. Ansgar finished seventh in the Class 1A boys 400

 

== Lauren Hillesland of North Iowa finished 10th in the Class 1A girls 3000

 

== The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys finished 10th in the Class 2A 4×800 medley relay

 

== Braydin Crum of Central Springs finished tenth in the Class 2A boys long jump
