Bushel Boy sells hydroponic greenhouse operations in Mason City, Owatonna

OWATONNA, MINNESOTA — Bushel Boy Farms has announced they’ve sold their hydroponic growing facilities in Mason City and Owatonna Minnesota.

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports that Bushel Boy president Chuck Tryon says the company was sold to Best Boy Farms on Friday. Tryon says Best Boy will operate the facilities and greenhouses in Mason City and Owatonna and hire a number of Bushel Boy’s former employees.

A sale price was not disclosed.

Tryon told the Star Tribune that Bushel Boy’s parent company, Rahr Corporation of Shakopee, sold Bushel Boy as it tightens its focus around brewing.

Bushel Boy started as a greenhouse-grown tomato company in 1990 and expanded in recent years to other fruits and vegetables. Rahr had purchased Bushel Boy in 2018 and two years later opened a new $35 million facility in Mason City.

In a post on their Facebook page, Bushel Boy confirmed they were no longer operating the greenhouses, stating, “While this chapter of our journey is coming to an end, we will be forever grateful to the employees and customers whose passion for premium, locally-grown produce made it possible. We are deeply proud to have been a part of every meal you made with something we grew.”
