Elwood honored for lifesaving efforts during lobbying trip by Mason City leaders

MASON CITY — A member of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has been given the “Can-Do Spirit of Mason City Award” for his lifesaving efforts during a recent lobbying trip by Mason City and Clear Lake leaders to Washington DC.

Troy Elwood was among the 17 local leaders gathered at a restaurant after spending time with federal leaders and officials earlier in the day. During that gathering, a patron collapsed, unconscious on the floor.

Mayor Bill Schickel, who was part of the delegation, describes Elwood’s immediate lifesaving efforts. “Troy jumped into action, despite everybody else being there as a member of our delegation and took care of business and administered CPR right away and really saved the guy’s life. His pulse was gone, it took some time to get his pulse back, didn’t get it back until the time the paramedics arrived. We just thought that was noteworthy, and we really thought that embodied the spirit of the entire trip, visiting with our lawmakers, just a can-do north Iowa spirit. A lot of good things came out of that trip, and that was one of them.”

Elwood received the award at the start of this week’s meeting of the City Council. Mason City Municipal Airport manager David Sims assisted Elwood and was also recognized.

Schickel made his comments on the “Ask the Mayor” podcast which you can listen to by clicking here
