High school roundup from Thursday — Newman & Clear Lake split baseball doubleheader

CLEAR LAKE — #9/1A Newman and Clear Lake split a non-conference baseball doubleheader last night in Clear Lake. The Knights took the opener 9-0 behind a combined three-hit shutout by Cal McGuire, Thomas McGuire and West Cole. Cal McGuire helped his own cause from the plate with three runs batted in. Clear Lake in the nightcap came back from a 6-1 deficit after an inning and a half with four runs in the bottom of the second, two more in the third and one in the fourth in an 8-6 win that was shortened to five innings by rain. Nick Haugland picked up the win in relief, pitching the final two innings and striking out five. Clear Lake is 4-5 overall and next will host St. Edmond in a North Central Conference doubleheader on Monday night that you’ll see on northiowanow.com starting at 5 o’clock. Newman is now 6-3 and will host Northwood-Kensett in Top of Iowa Conference action tonight before traveling to West Des Moines to play West Des Moines Dowling and Davenport Assumption in the Dowling Catholic Classic on Saturday.

MASON CITY — After giving up five runs in the top of the sixth, Mason City High responded with a six-run bottom half of the inning to beat Gilbert 11-8 in non-conference baseball last night at Roosevelt Field in Mason City. Lincoln Berding had three runs batted in while Owen Rickers and Bennett Miller each knocked in two runs for the Riverhawks. Mason City is 4-6 overall and will host Waverly-Shell Rock in a doubleheader tonight that starts at 5 o’clock and can be seen on northiowanow.com
