Russell Lee McAfee, 73, of Mason City

Russell Lee McAfee, 73, of Mason City, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at
Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 12:30pm Monday,
June 16, 2025 at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel 126 3rd St. NE Mason City, IA 50401.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take
place after the service at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Russell was born on December 8, 1951, in Mason City, the son of Donald and Shirley McAfee.
He graduated from Mason City High School and spent most of his life dedicated to meaningful
work, including time at Mercy West Campus, Opportunity Village, and Affordables.

Russell was a man of quiet strength and deep devotion—to his faith, to learning, and the simple
joys of life. He had a lifelong passion for reading, particularly, the bible, westerns and ancient
history. He loved to share interesting facts or ask thought-provoking questions. Though he was
a man of few words, when he did speak, his words were kind, powerful, and often full of insight.
Easygoing and agreeable, Russell carried a peaceful, steady presence. He had a soft spot in
his heart for cats and a gentle spirit that made him easy to be around. He read through his Bible
multiple times and lived a life grounded in faith, humility, and curiosity.

Russell’s favorite radio station was KCMR. It was always his constant companion. He enjoyed
listening to their religious music and programs, which gave him comfort.

Suzy-Q was a favorite café, where he shared many meals and good conversations with friends.
It was a place where he could come and enjoy a nice meal in the presence of good company.

In his later years, Russell lived at Apple Valley Assisted Living, and was later graciously
accepted into the care of Oakwood Care Center, where he spent his days with dignity and
compassion. Deep appreciation to Cheryl, R.N., and to all Oakwood staff for their care and
loving support.

Russell will be deeply missed by his family and everyone that knew him.

He is survived by his sister, Donna (Richard) Nesje; his brothers, Gary (Virginia) McAfee, Alan
McAfee (special friend Lorita), and Larry (Andrea) McAfee; along with six nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Shirley McAfee; his infant brother,
Warren Jay McAfee; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.
