Urness hired as Clear Lake’s girls basketball coach, while former MCHS coach Klaahsen takes over at GHV

CLEAR LAKE — Former Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls basketball coach Adam Urness has been hired to take over the girls basketball coaching duties at Clear Lake, while a familiar face in the girls basketball coaching world says he’s taking over the job at GHV.

== Urness is originally from Clarion and coached the Cardinals the last three seasons, accumulating a record of 27-41. Urness also served two seasons as the Iowa State University women’s basketball team’s coordinator of player development from 2016 to 2018. Urness will replace Bart Smith, who resigned after 14 seasons leading the Lions’ program. Urness’ coaching contract was approved by the Clear Lake School Board at their meeting last night.

== Former Mason City High girls coach Curt Klaahsen stated in a social media post on Tuesday evening that he’s been announced as the new head girls basketball coach at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura. Klaahsen was the head girls basketball coach at Mason City from 2007 to 2024, leading the Riverhawks to seven state tournament appearances and one state championship. Klaahsen in his social media post says that he was invited last summer to collaborate with the GHV coaches and players and that players and families reached out to him after Urness announced his departure. He says the opportunity to coach again was worth looking into and eventually was too good to pass up.
