Corn, soybean crops progressing well despite rain

DES MOINES — Soybeans are starting to bloom here in north-central Iowa as both the region’s corn and soybean crops have almost fully emerged, according to the new USDA crop report released on Monday.

At 97%, nearly all of Iowa’s corn crop has emerged, ahead of last year’s pace but matching the five-year average. Corn condition rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 14% fair, 63% good and 21% excellent. Here in the north-central crop reporting district, 100% of the corn has been reported as emerged. 93% of the soybeans statewide have emerged, one week ahead of last year and two days ahead of normal.

Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 17% fair, 62% good and 18% excellent. Here locally, 98% of the soybeans have emerged and 1% are blooming. Iowa’s oat crop reached 69% headed and 19% turning color.

Oat conditions rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 15% fair, 65% good and 19% excellent. Here in north-central Iowa, oats are 66% headed and 14% turning color.

Farmers in north-central Iowa had 4.4 days suitable for field work last week, under the statewide average of 5.5 days.
