“Harmony in Light” sculpture dedicated at Riverwalk District site, grand opening on Thursday

MASON CITY — There was a brief ceremony this morning to mark the installation of the major sculpture that’s part of the Riverwalk District and Waterfront Plaza in downtown Mason City.
The south end of the Southbridge Mall parking lot has been transformed into an inviting, usable space incorporating the natural environment next to Willow Creek and link the community’s cultural amenities as well as recreational and leisure venues with the downtown area.
“Harmony in Light” was created by artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk from the nationally recognized HYBYCOZO Studios.
Beaulieu was in Mason City this morning for the ceremony in front of the 20 cylinders set up to look like a sound wave, each featuring the style of Prairie School architecture. “A temple of sound, a temple of architecture, a temple of the purity of form. That’s sort of the inspiration from it. It represents from a distance a sound wave. It has these simple forms, the simplicity which is akin to the Prairie School architecture movement, with these details that represent the stained glass effect. Additionally they almost appear like instruments of some kind, the different lengths. So they have this not obvious but sort of esoteric representation of sound.”
There are lights inside each of the 20 cylinders which create a lighted pattern on the cement. Beaulieu says people have been curious to get a closer look at “Harmony in Light”. “We’ve been experiencing it the last two days we’ve been here, seeing cars drive over the bridge, turn around and do a swing-by and say ‘what is this?’. It’s really gaining attention, and that’s a really important part for any city or community to have something like that.”
Beaulieu made his comments during the recording of the “Ask the Mayor” podcast today at the Riverwalk
The official ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony for the new Riverwalk District and Waterfront Plaza will be held tomorrow at 10:00 AM.
