High school roundup from Tuesday June 17 — Evans grand slam, two-run homer lead Mason City over Clear Lake

MASON CITY — Brogan Evans hit a grand slam to get Mason City back into the game and then hit another two-run home run to put the game away as the Riverhawks beat Clear Lake for the fifth straight year, 9-7, as you saw on the Clear Lake Lions page at northiowanow.com last night. Clear Lake took a 5-0 lead after the top of the fourth inning, but Evans’ grand slam cut the lead to 5-4, with Mason City scoring a total of seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Evans later pushed the lead to 9-5 in the fifth with the two-run round tripper. Mason City then held off a seventh inning rally that saw the Lions score two but left the tying run on first base. Mason City improves to 4-7 on the season and will travel to Waterloo West later this evening. Clear Lake drops to 11-6 on the year and will return to North Central Conference action tonight hosting Hampton-Dumont-CAL.
MASON CITY — Osage scored two runs in the top of the seventh as the 5th-ranked in Class 2A Green Devils picked up a 2-1 at Newman last night. With the win, Osage now holds sole possession of the top spot in the Top of Iowa Conference East Division standings with an 8-0 record, and they are 17-0 overall. Newman drops to 9-2 on the season and 3-1 in the conference. Osage will host 8th-ranked in Class 2A Central Springs tonight. Newman will travel to North Butler tonight.

MASON CITY — Newman swept a Top of Iowa Conference East Division baseball doubleheader against Osage last night. In the opener, the Knights scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings in a 3-2 win. West Cole pitched a five-hitter, striking out six in picking up the win. In the nightcap, Newman scored two runs each in the fifth and seventh in a 5-1 victory. Gage Peterson had two doubles and two runs batted in. Newman is now 12-5 overall and sit on top of the Top of Iowa East with a 7-0 record. The Knights host West Fork tonight for a conference doubleheader. Osage drops to 5-4 in the conference and 7-6 overall and will host Central Springs tonight.
WAVERLY — Waverly-Shell Rock downed Mason City High 5-3 in non-conference baseball last night. Gabe Ries had a solo home run to lead the Riverhawks, who drop to 12-7 on the season. The Riverhawks are off tonight and will travel to Clear Lake on Thursday night in a game you can see on the Mason City Riverhawks page at northiowanow.com
