Mason City pharmacist sentenced to federal prison for diverting controlled substances

SIOUX CITY — A Mason City pharmacist is heading to federal prison for a month after pleading guilty for diverting controlled substances.
43-year-old Megan Elsbury was sentenced on Tuesday in US District Court in Sioux City after pleading guilty in February to one count of acquiring a controlled substance by means of misrepresentation, fraud, deception and subterfuge.
The US Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa’s office says Elsbury admitted as part of a plea agreement to working at multiple pharmacies in Mason City from 2008 to 2023, and during that time diverted multiple controlled substances for her own personal use.
Elsbury created unauthorized prescriptions and falsified prescription records and inventory in the names of existing patients, primarily when the pharmacy was closed, filled the prescriptions, paid for them, and took them for her own personal use.
Elsbury was sentenced to one month in prison to be followed by a one-year term of supervised release.
