Mason City High, Newman split baseball doubleheader

MASON CITY — Mason City High and Newman Catholic split a doubleheader in their annual crosstown baseball meeting on Saturday afternoon, as you saw on the Riverhawks page here on northiowanow.com .

In the first game, Gabe Ries had three runs batted in, including a two-out, two-run single in the sixth inning that ended up giving the Riverhawks a 4-3 win. Lincoln Berding picked up the win, striking out nine in five innings of work.

In the nightcap, Cal McGuire fired a three-hit shutout to lead the Knights to a 3-0 win. Gage Petersen, Isaiah Kesten and Colin Bleile each knocked in a run in the second game.

Newman is now 18-7 overall and will host Estherville Lincoln Central in a non-conference contest tonight.

Mason City is 16-11 and they’ll travel to Waterloo East for an Iowa Alliance Conference North Division doubleheader tonight.
