Heavy rain keeps farmers out of field last week

DES MOINES — Heavy rain kept farmers out of the field for most of last week according to the latest USDA crop report for the state of Iowa. Statewide, days suitable for field work were just 2.7 during the week. While beneficial, the wet conditions limited field activities throughout much of the state. Here in north-central Iowa, there were 2.0 days suitable for field work, the second worst of the nine regions of the state.

Reports of corn starting to silk were received throughout the state, reaching 3%. Corn condition rates 0% very poor, 2% poor, 13% fair, 63% good and 22% excellent.

Soybeans blooming statewide reached 22%, with that number here in north-central Iowa being 15%. That’s three days ahead of last year and 2 days ahead of normal. Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 19% fair, 61% good and 16% excellent.

Iowa’s oat crop reached 90% headed with 39% turning color. In north-central Iowa, 86% were headed and 32% had turned color. Oat condition statewide rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 15% fair, 68% good and 15% excellent.
