High school roundup from Tuesday July 1 — Newman stays alive in TIC East softball race with win over Central Springs

MASON CITY — The Newman softball team stayed alive in the Top of Iowa Conference East Division race as the #8/1A Knights shutout #11/2A Central Springs 7-0 last night in Mason City. Newman is now 19-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference. #4/2A Osage sits two games ahead of the Knights in the win column this morning with an 11-1 record after their win over North Butler yesterday afternoon. Newman has matchups with St. Ansgar, Osage and #8/2A West Fork left on their schedule. West Fork is still in the conference race with a 9-2 record.
CLEAR LAKE — An 11:30 AM start did not hurt Clear Lake in their make-up game with Humboldt in North Central Conference play on Tuesday. The Lions scored three times in the third and fifth, and single runs in the fourth and sixth to beat the Wildcats 8-0 at Lions Field. Clear Lake has won its 15th game of the season, the most wins by a Lions squad in over 20 years. The Lions are 15-8 overall and 9-3 in the conference and will host Algona tonight.
MARSHALLTOWN — Marshalltown swept Mason City in an Iowa Alliance Conference doubleheader on Tuesday. The Bobcats rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener and then took the second game of the doubleheader with a 6-3 victory. Brogan Evans had a two-run home run and an RBI triple in the first game for the Riverhawks, who drop to 6-18 overall and 1-9 in the conference. Both schools will face each other again tonight in a doubleheader in Mason City

STORY CITY — The Newman baseball team split a doubleheader at Roland-Story last night in non-conference play. The Knights needed a comeback in the opener, scoring three times in the seventh and then two runs in the eighth to down the Norsemen 9-7. Roland-Story in the nightcap jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the first inning and held off another late comeback attempt by Newman, winning 7-5. Newman is now 20-8 on the season and will look to win the Top of Iowa Conference East Division title outright tonight as they travel to St. Ansgar. The Knights are 12-1 in the conference, while St. Ansgar is 10-2 heading into tonight’s game.
