High school roundup from Wednesday July 2 — Newman beats St. Ansgar to win TIC East baseball title

ST. ANSGAR — Newman survived an eight-inning battle with St. Ansgar to capture the Top of Iowa Conference East Division title on Wednesday night. Newman led 3-0 after five, with the Saints cutting the lead to 3-2 in the sixth. The Knights added two more runs in the seventh, but St. Ansgar tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with three more runs and sent the game to extra innings. Newman then scored twice in the top of the eighth and was able to hold the Saints in the bottom half of the inning for a 7-5 victory. Colin Bleile and Alek Egger each had two runs batted in on the night for Newman. The Knights finish conference play with a record of 13-1 and are 21-8 overall. They’ll travel to Dike-New Hartford tonight before starting district play on Saturday hosting Clarksville. St. Ansgar finishes conference play with a 10-3 record and are 16-7 overall. The Saints will host Clarksville tonight to wrap up regular season play.
MASON CITY — The Mason City High baseball team swept Marshalltown in a conference doubleheader at Roosevelt Field last night, as you saw on northiowanow.com. In the opener, Kinnick Brown had three hits, including two doubles, and knocked in five runs in a 15-0, four inning win. The Riverhawks only needed four innings in the nightcap as well, scoring six runs in the third and four in the seventh for a 17-2 win. Brown added three more runs batted in while Bennett Miller was 4-for-4 with two doubles and six runs batted in. Mason City is 20-11 overall and 9-5 in the conference. They will travel to Ames tonight for a conference doubleheader.

ST. ANSGAR — In high school softball, Newman scored five in the second and four runs in the fourth for a 9-0 five-inning victory over St. Ansgar in Top of Iowa Conference East Division play. Sami Kruckenberg struck out nine in four innings of work and also knocked in two runs. Newman is now 10-1 in the conference and 20-4 overall. The 8th-ranked in Class 1A Knights travel to face the 4th-ranked in Class 2A Osage Green Devils tonight in a key East Division contest, as Osage is a game ahead of Newman in the win column with an 11-1 conference mark.
