Spirit Lake man dead after SUV collides with two motorcycles

WINNEBAGO COUNTY — A Spirit Lake man is dead after a collision between an SUV and two motorcycles on Saturday in Winnebago County.

The Iowa State Patrol says motorcycles driven by 23-year-old David Raak and 64-year-old Daniel Raak both of Spirit Lake were westbound on State Highway 9 west of 150th Avenue at about 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon when an eastbound vehicle driven by 95-year-old Leroy Weaver of Buffalo Center crossed the center line and sideswiped Daniel Raak’s motorcycle and struck David Raak’s motorcycle head on.

David Raak’s motorcycle was pushed back from the point of impact, stopping on the north shoulder, while a passenger on that motorcycle, 21-year-old Kayla Hudelson of Belle Fourche South Dakota, was ejected from the motorcycle. Daniel Raak’s motorcycle lost control after being sideswiped and stopped on the north shoulder. Weaver’s vehicle entered the north ditch and stopped in a field.

All four were taken to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. David Raak was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the other three were treated for injuries.

The Iowa State Patrol says they are continuing their investigation into the accident.
