Crops doing well according to new USDA report

DES MOINES — This week’s edition of the state crop report from the USDA shows positive things are continuing with the year’s corn and soybean crops.

Corn silking statewide reached 15%, matching last year, but two days ahead of the five-year average. That number was 17% here in the north-central crop reporting district. A few reports of corn reaching the dough stage were received. Corn condition rated 0% very poor, 2% poor, 12% fair, 62% good, and 24% excellent.

Soybeans blooming statewide reached 36%, three days ahead of last year and one day ahead of the average. 9% of the soybeans were setting pods. Here in north-central Iowa, soybeans blooming were at 31% while 1% were setting pods.  Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 18% fair, 60% good and 19% excellent.

Iowa’s oat crop reached 94% headed and 55% turning color. Oats harvested for grain reached 9% complete. Oat numbers in north-central Iowa were 94% headed, 63% coloring, and 6% harvested. Oat condition was 0% very poor, 1% poor, 11% fair, 71% good and 17% excellent.
