Iowa Ag Secretary makes north-central Iowa stops, including Lake Time Brewery’s production facility in Clear Lake

CLEAR LAKE — Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture and Land Stewardship made several stops in north-central Iowa on Wednesday, including to the Lake Time Brewery production facility in Clear Lake.

Mike Naig says brewers such as Lake Time are producing “value added” agricultural products since there are several ingredients in the beer that come from Iowa.  “This is part of getting around the state, particularly highlighting folks that are doing local sales. We’re out promoting ‘Choose Iowa’, which is our state branded program for Iowa grown, Iowa made, Iowa raised products. We’re trying to connect the dots between folks that are brewing, distilling, making wine, you name it, baking, but trying to encourage sourcing local ingredients.”

Naig says part of his visits to farms and businesses is that he wants to know what’s on people’s minds.  “I want to know what their challenges are and what’s going well. We heard about some things here today that are working well. Then you also want to understand where your costs concerns, are there regulatory issues, or are there tax issues that we could be looking at to make life easier for breweries or for small businesses in the state of Iowa, and certainly again trying to promote and figure out how do we connect the dots better between what farmers are producing and what folks, like what they are doing here at Lake Time, are doing in terms of making a really good product.”

Naig also made stops at the Red Shed Gardens in Forest City and also gave remarks at the National Historic Landmark Ceremony at the REA Power Plant Museum near Hampton.
