Drought conditions in Iowa improve slightly

DES MOINES — Drought conditions continue to improve statewide due to above-normal precipitation totals in June.
Around 37% of the state still has some level of drought being reported, according to the latest Iowa Drought Monitor statistics released on Thursday. Those areas are mainly in the four corners of the state. At the beginning of the year, 80% of the state was experiencing drought conditions.
While most of those areas experiencing drought are at the “D-0 Abnormally Dry” level, 4% of the state is still experiencing the D-1 level of “Moderate Drought”. Those areas are in south-central Iowa in the areas of Davis, Wapello, Monroe and Appanoose counties; southwest Iowa in Montgomery, Page, Fremont and Mills counties; and small patches in Davis County in northwest Iowa as well as in Dubuque and Jackson counties in northeastern Iowa.
