Cerro Gordo supervisors approve support for Mason City’s application for Clean Air Attainment Program funds
MASON CITY — The Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors without comment today approved a letter of support for the City of Mason City’s application for Clear Air Attainment Program Funding for a project to improve a major intersection in the northwestern portion of the community. Funding from the program is available for communities to reduce congestion and improve air quality.
The Mason City City Council in May approved purchasing land near the intersection of 12th Northwest and North Pierce Avenue as they prepare to construct a roundabout to help spur future development in the area.
The council earlier this year approved a zoning change for the property at 1300 12th Northwest from Restricted Industry to Multi-Use, as the owner Indianhead Farms stated at the time of the zoning change proposal that they were intending to sell the property for the development of a medium box commercial building with accessory parking and onsite storm water detention.
In a letter to the state, Supervisors chairman Chris Watts says providing a roundabout will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and reduce delays while supporting local commerce by making it easier for customers, employees, and delivery services to access businesses in the area, and with traffic congestion reduced, it will have a positive effect on air quality by reducing emissions.
