Crops continue good progress despite wet weather
DES MOINES — Another wild weather week last week has resulted in crops continuing to be in positive shape.
The new USDA crop report says corn silking reached 36%, one day behind last year but one day ahead of the normal. 5% of the state’s corn crop reached the dough stage. Here in the north-central crop reporting district, 40% of the corn is silking and 1% was in the dough stage. Corn condition statewide was 1% very poor, 2% poor, 12% fair, 58% good and 27% excellent.
Soybeans blooming reached 54%, three days ahead of last year but equal with the five-year average. 18% of soybeans were setting pods, four days ahead of last year and three days ahead of the average. In north-central Iowa, 52% of soybeans were blooming and 12% were setting pods. Soybean condition rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 18% fair, 59% good and 20% excellent.
96% of the state’s oat crop was headed and 71% were turning color. Oats harvested for grain reached 19% complete. In north-central Iowa, 96% of oats were headed, 74% had turned color and 15% had been harvested. Oat condition rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 13% fair, 71% good and 15% excellent.
