Substate baseball — St. Ansgar advances to 1A state tournament, Newman falls to Kee

DECORAH — After giving up solo home runs in each of the first two innings, Kee scored six runs in the third and added two more in the fourth to hold of Newman 8-5 and win the Class 1A Substate 3 championship game played in Decorah and advance to the state baseball tournament next week. The Knights end their season with a 25-9 record.
CHARLES CITY — St. Ansgar is headed back to the state baseball tournament as they beat Wapsie Valley 2-0 in the Class 1A Substate 3 championship game last night played in Charles City. Mason Beland struck out seven in pitching a complete-game shutout. Ryker Hoffman knocked in Gus Walk with a single in the first inning to give the Saints the lead, then added a run in the fourth with Colton Wynia scoring on a Wapsie Valley error. St. Ansgar improves to 20-7 on the season and will be the third seed in the Class 1A state tournament. They’ll face the sixth seed Logan-Magnolia on Monday night at 7 o’clock in the 1A state quarterfinals in Carroll.
