Virginia man accused of driving 109 MPH while eluding law enforcement, trying to hit patrol car in Cerro Gordo County

CLEAR LAKE — A Virginia man is in the Cerro Gordo County Jail after allegedly driving more than 100 miles per hour while evading law enforcement and trying to hit an Iowa State Patrol vehicle.

A criminal complaint says 40-year-old William La Cava of North Chesterfield Virginia was northbound on Interstate 35 near the 186 mile marker in the southern part of the county at around 9:45 Wednesday morning when passing motorists reported him for driving recklessly.

A state trooper says he clocked La Cava going 109 miles per hour and that he allegedly failed to yield to the trooper’s emergency lights and siren and attempted to elude.

The complaint says La Cava was actively attempting to elude law enforcement and later intentionally used his motor vehicle and swerved at the trooper, attempting to crash into the patrol vehicle. The trooper took evasive action to avoid a collision and drove into the median. La Cava’s front tire was deflated by stop sticks but he continued to elude law enforcement before a state trooper forcefully pushed the SUV into a ditch to end the pursuit.

La Cava was charged with assault on persons in certain occupations, a Class C felony; eluding at speeds of more than 25 miles per hour over the speed limit, a Class D felony; as well as reckless driving, speeding, and leaving the scene of an accident.

La Cava is being held in jail on a total of $7664 bond.
