Charge of critical infrastructure sabotage dropped against Forest City man

FOREST CITY — A Forest City man originally charged with critical infrastructure sabotage after being accused of shutting off the gas and water at an apartment complex earlier this month has had that charge dropped.

A criminal complaint filed in Winnebago County District Court originally stated that 54-year-old Anthony Kokakis allegedly went into the utility room at the Brown Apartments at 136 West G Street at about 6:30 on the morning of July 6th and shut off the water and gas supply to multiple units. The complaint says witnesses and Kokakis’ social worker told police that this is not the first time he had shut those off. Kokakis lives in an adjacent apartment building.

Kokakis is also accused of burglarizing an unoccupied truck parked at the complex and smoked a pack of cigarettes belonging to the vehicle’s owner.

Kokakis was charged with one count of critical infrastructure sabotage, a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison, as well as third-degree burglary of a motor vehicle, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Formal trial information was filed in the case last week, with prosecutors dropping the critical infrastructure sabotage charge.

Kokakis is due back in court for his arraignment hearing on the third-degree burglary charge on August 1st.
