Wet July helping crops in some areas, hurting in other areas

DES MOINES — A wet month of July has caused some localized issues with standing water and flash flooding in some areas, according to details of the new Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released on Monday by the US Department of Agriculture.

Iowa Agriculture Secretary Mike Naig says while overall crop progress has benefited from the wetter conditions and somewhat milder temperatures, attention now is turning to the heat dome building in over the state, which will bring hot temperatures and humidity to the state this week.

Corn silking reached 62% statewide, one day behind last year’s pace. 18% of Iowa’s corn had reached the dough stage. In the north-central crop reporting district, corn silking was at 67% while 17% had reached the dough stage.

Corn condition rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 11% fair, 59% good and 27% excellent.

69% of soybeans statewide had bloomed, one day ahead of last year but one day behind the five-year average. 33% of soybeans were setting pods, four days ahead of last year and two days ahead of the average. Here in north-central Iowa, 74% of soybeans were blooming and 23% were setting pods.

Soybean condition statewide was 1% very poor, 2% poor, 17% fair, 59% good and 21% excellent.
