Minnesota man pleads guilty to reduced Floyd County drug charge, sentenced to week in jail

CHARLES CITY — A Minnesota man arrested along with a Missouri woman on drug charges near Charles City earlier this year has pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and been sentenced to a week in jail.
A criminal complaint says early on the morning of February 3rd, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop at the 227 mile marker of US Highway 218. The deputy noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and during a search, two bags containing a green leafy substance were discovered, which when field tested came back positive for cannabis. Also located in the vehicle was a glass jar inside a purse that later tested positive for about 21 grams of methamphetamine, a handgun with a loaded extended magazine, and two clear plastic bags of multi-colored tablets that authorities say were ecstasy.
41-year-old James Davis of Brooklyn Park Minnesota and 40-year-old Ashley Smith of St. Louis were charged with a Class B felony of conspiring with the intent to manufacture or deliver meth over five grams as well as the serious misdemeanor of possession of marijuana first offense, while Smith was also charged with possession of meth first offense.
Davis last week as part of a plea agreement pleaded guilty to possession of meth first offense, a serious misdemeanor, and was sentenced on Tuesday to seven days in jail.
Smith is scheduled to be tried on September 3rd.
