Drought almost eliminated in Iowa after heavy rain in last week

DES MOINES — Only 4% of the state is in some level of drought currently according to the new Iowa Drought Monitor Report released today.

According to the data gathered on Tuesday, 96% of the state is not experiencing drought conditions. That compares to 88% last week, 27% three months ago, and 20% at the start of the calendar year.

The only patches of drought are in southern Iowa. Wapello County and the northern part of Davis County in southeastern Iowa are experiencing D1-Moderate Drought conditions, while four counties in the far southwest corner are also experiencing drought.

After last night’s heavy rain across the area, the Mason City Municipal Airport has received 4.71 inches of rain for the month, higher than the normal of 3.34 inches. Since June 1st, Mason City has picked up 13.70 inches of rain, almost five inches about normal.
