James Russell Ryan, 79, of Clive, formerly from Clear Lake

James Russell Ryan, 79, of Clive, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, with his
loving family by his side. Born November 6, 1945, James lived a life marked by quiet
strength, deep integrity, and steadfast devotion to those he loved. On June 18, 1965, he
married his high school sweetheart, Bonnye Hoffman. Their marriage, built on partnership
and mutual respect, was the foundation of a beautiful life shared over six decades.
Jim was a devoted husband, proud father, cherished Papa, and loyal friend. He was known
for his calm presence, generosity, and his ability to befriend anyone. His gentle spirit and
kind heart left an impression on everyone who knew him. He was incredibly selfless and
would do anything for his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Jim's unwavering
kindness and generosity touched everyone he met.
Jim grew up on the farm near Popejoy, IA, graduating from Alden High School. The early
death of his father kept Jim home on the farm after high school, where he and Bonnye
raised their family near Popejoy. Eventually, they moved to Clear Lake, IA, where Jim
enjoyed living near the lake and all the activity for 35 years before retiring to Clive, IA, to be
near his daughter, Amanda, and her family.
He was preceded in death by his son Tad Russell Ryan, parents Melba (Oelson) and Harold
Russell Ryan, mother and father-in-law Helen (Lyon) and Robert Hoffman, sister Mary Kay
Ryan, brother Michael Rae Ryan, sister-in-law Joyce (Hoffman) Schager, and niece Jenny
Ryan.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnye; his children, Tyler Ryan and partner Sean
Tackett (Chandler, AZ), Amanda (Joel Secory), (Waukee, IA); his grandchildren, Elle Ryan
Secory and EJ (Edward James) Secory; brother Tim (Diane) Ryan; sister-in-law Shirley
Ryan, brother-in-law Robert Schager; sister-in-law Sylvia (Dr. Dennis) Ginoza; nieces,
nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will continue to honor his memory with love.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date. The family kindly asks that memorial
contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in his memory.
Jim’s legacy is one of love, loyalty, and quiet impact—a life well-lived, and he will be deeply
missed.
