New crop report shows conditions of corn, soybean crop stable

DES MOINES — A hot, muggy, and rain-filled week last week didn’t have much of an impact on the condition of Iowa’s corn and soybean crops.

Farmers statewide averaged 3.6 days that were suitable for field work last week, while that number was slightly lower here in the north-central crop reporting district at 3.2 days.

Corn silking reached 84%, which is one day ahead of both last year and the five-year average. 34% of Iowa’s corn has reached the dough stage, one day ahead of last year and three days ahead of normal. Here in north-central Iowa, 93% of corn was silking and 28% had reached the dough stage.

Corn condition statewide rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 10% fair, 59% good and 28% excellent.

Soybeans blooming statewide reached 81%, unchanged from last year and two days behind normal. 52% of the soybeans were setting pods, five days ahead of last year and two days ahead of the five-year average. Here in north-central Iowa, 82% of soybeans were blooming and 45% were setting pods.

Soybean condition statewide rated 1% very poor, 2% poor, 15% fair, 61% good and 21% excellent.

95% of oats were turning color statewide and 49% had been harvested. In north-central Iowa, 96% of oats had turned color and 46% had been harvested.
