Mason City City Council confirms McKelvey as city’s next Chief of Police

MASON CITY — The City Council in Mason City last night approved the nomination of Captain Mike McKelvey to be the city’s next Chief of Police.

The council took action after current chief Jeff Brinkley last week announced his upcoming retirement, with his last day on the job being November 14th, and with accumulated vacation time, his last official day on the city’s payroll will be February 10th.

City Administrator Aaron Burnett announced last Friday that with council confirmation he was appointing McKelvey to be the acting chief starting November 14th and then fully take over on February 10th. Burnett says Brinkley has been a great partner and a great community advocate, and he believes McKelvey can continue to be that as the new chief.   “When I had the unfortunate conversation of him telling me that he was going to be retiring, that Captain McKelvey was one of my first thoughts, because I know that his leadership, his personality, his dedication, his passion will be of immense service to this community, a great leader for the department, and frankly another friend to work alongside with the city.”

The council unanimously approved McKelvey’s appointment.

McKelvey will join us when we record the “Ask the Mayor” podcast later this morning, with the program being published online sometime after 10:00 AM on northiowanow.com
