NEW HARTFORD — More National Guard soldiers are heading to Washington DC to bolster the troops President Trump has already deployed to the city. Trump declared a public safety emergency last week as he claimed the nation’s capitol was gripped by complete and total lawlessness.
Iowa US Senator Chuck Grassley supports Trump’s decision, saying there’s no doubt what Trump is doing is needed. “The people that live in Washington DC, just like the people that live in New Hartford Iowa or Pocahontas or anyplace else in Iowa ought to be able to live safely. The people in Washington can’t live safely from the high murder rate, and the carjackings, and the stealing that goes on in the retail stores.”
Grassley says Washington deserves to be a safer place. “I agree with him that it’s bad. We’ve even had members of Congress accosted, and you just can’t have that. The President stepping in is doing the right thing because the people of Washington DC ought to have a safe neighborhood.”
West Virginia will be sending about 300 to 400 of the state’s National Guard troops at President Trump’s request. South Carolina will send 200 troops and Ohio will send 150 military police from their National Guard.
