Ribbon cutting held for first portion of Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park project in Mason City
MASON CITY — A ribbon cutting ceremony took place this morning for the first portions of the Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park in northeastern Mason City.
The first of its kind in Iowa mountain bike park located at 1500 Elm Drive connects riders to more than 20 miles of trails and 600 acres of scenic parkland. The project was made possible through a $4.5 million Destination Iowa grant as it transformed the former Decker Packing Plant site that closed in 1975 and has remained undeveloped for decades.
Alaina Santizo oversees the Destination Iowa grant program for the Iowa Economic Development Authority. “Mason City has long been known for its rich history and vibrant community. Today we add another chapter, one that positions the city to become the outdoor recreation capital of the Midwest.”
Santizo says cycling and trail use infuse over a billion dollars to the state’s economy. “Cycling and trail use contribute $1.4 billion annually to Iowa’s economy. The Prairie Rock Trails will be a significant driver of that locally. At IEDA, we were proud to support this transformational project through Destination Iowa. It’s a shining example of how strategic investment can elevate communities and attract new residents and businesses.”
Other portions of the park project are continuing to be constructed, and another ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place for the entire project at a later date.
