DNR investigating copper release near Garner into drainage ditch

GARNER — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says they are investigating the release of copper near Garner following a broken pipe at the Zinpro facility on Thursday.

The DNR says they were notified at about 7:00 AM of a broken pipe that resulted in the release of an estimated 700 gallons of copper-containing liquid. The material then flowed into an on-site storm drain, ultimately discharging into a drainage ditch located on the west side of the facility.

The DNR says cleanup efforts are underway with the drainage ditch being dammed one mile downstream of the discharge location to prevent further spread of material.

Reports of dead fish have been confirmed in Drainage Ditch 81 between the facility and Sioux Avenue in Garner. The water has displayed a blue hue, likely due to the release of copper.

Residents in the area are advised to avoid contact with water in Drainage Ditch 81.
