2025 class of Mason City High School Athletic Hall of Fame to be inducted tonight

MASON CITY — The Mason City High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2025 will be inducted as part of ceremonies at halftime of tonight’s game:
== Marcus Lunning was an outstanding multi-sport athlete who had a career batting average of .420 and was the first in school history to be named a three-time All-State baseball player as well as being named to the State Elite All-State Team his senior year. Lunning led the Mohawks to back-to-back state tournaments hitting .464 his senior year. He was an All-State wide receiver in football as well as a two-year starting guard in basketball.
== Donna McKay was the long-time cheerleading coach at Mason City High School. During her 20 years leading cheerleading teams, they won three state championships and she coached 89 All-State cheerleaders. She was named the National Federation of High School Athletics National Spirit Coach of the Year in 2006 and received the Iowa Cheerleading Coaches Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. McKay was the chair of the National Federation Spirit Rules Committee from 2014-2016 and served as Executive Director and two-time president of the Iowa Cheerleading Coaches Association. She also served as a national cheerleading competition judge and was co-author of the book “Complete Cheerleading”
== Alice Phillips was a long-time physical education teacher as well as a tennis and volleyball coach at Mason City High School. She started the school’s volleyball program and was instrumental in helping start volleyball programs throughout the state. Her 1970 and 1971 teams took third place at state, the 1972 team took second place, and the 1973 team won the state championship. She helped coordinate and host the first two state volleyball tournaments and was inducted into the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
== Shari Rottinghaus was the female student athlete of the year in 1983, playing both volleyball and basketball at Mason City High School, being third-team All-State her senior year. After playing college basketball both at NIACC and Buena Vista, she was the head volleyball coach at Mason City High School for five years as well as helping coach lower level teams. She became the activities administration assistant for the school’s athletic department in 1989, a position she held until her retirement earlier this year.
== The 1946 baseball team is also being inducted. The team was 18-2 and capped off the season winning a state championship, beating Des Moines North 3-2 in eight innings in the state championship game.
