High school football preview — #4 Clear Lake at #3 Humboldt, Mason City hosts Gilbert, Week 2 area schedule

HUMBOLDT — #4 Clear Lake travels to #3 Humboldt in an early season clash of ranked Class 3A teams. Both teams are 1-0 after opening week wins. Humboldt beat Clear Lake twice last season, in the eighth week of the regular season and then with a last-second game-winning field goal in the first round of the playoffs.

Lions coach Aaron Stensland says his players are taking the approach of building off this year’s game for success later in the season. “I think the kids are excited to just have fun Friday, just let it loose a little bit this year. Both teams we played last year, you do feel a little bit of that, you’re fighting for a district title the first time you play them for seeding and RPI, the second time you’re playing them you are playing to go into the quarterfinals, there’s all the pressure in the world. Tonight I think both teams can just let it rip and I think both teams’ seasons can take off in the right direction regardless of the outcome.”

MASON CITY — Mason City faces Gilbert to open the home portion of the 2025 football schedule tonight. The Riverhawks dropped a 20-14 decision to #3/4A Fort Dodge last week and they’ll face a Gilbert squad that started their season with a 20-15 victory at home against Carroll.
