Iowa Independent Film Festival this weekend in Mason City, Clear Lake

MASON CITY — The 2025 edition of the Iowa Independent Film Festival is underway in Mason City and Clear Lake.

After the opening night Thursday night showcasing local filmmakers, with the 50 films selected from over 150 submissions being played today and tomorrow at the Mason City Community Theater and the Clear Lake Arts Center.

The festival’s Alyssa Thomas says it’s a difficult but rewarding process selecting the films.  “It’s a lot to go through and it’s really actually pretty difficult to say what all the hard work this filmmaker put in just doesn’t quite make it, and we sometimes have difficult conversations about which ones get in and which ones don’t, but it’s all a lot of fun, and I have a great team I work with.”

Thomas says a big part of the event is networking with people in the film industry.   “So we have after-parties each night, and the weekend culminates with a red carpet-style awards ceremony.”
